Research consistently shows that flowers positively impact our wellbeing. A study by Park and Mattson found that hospital patients with flowers in their rooms needed less postoperative pain medication and displayed several additional positive results including more positive psychological conditions than those without flowers or plants.

A Rutgers University study found that the presence of flowers in the home increased happiness, and participant’s depression and anxiety subsided. Apparently just the scent of flowers can also elevate our mood and reduce anxiety.

Be environmentally conscious and choose to forage for wild flowers instead of purchasing ones at the shops. Shop bought flowers are often imported or come from far away and most often grown with the use of harmful chemicals. There is an abundance of wild flowers available during spring so why not bring some of those into your home. Daffodils, fragrant hyacinths, and tulips will leave you feeling much calmer and happier. Take it a step further and get yourself some houseplants. Aloe Vera plants, spider plants, bamboo plants will help purify the air and also create an environment conducive for eliminating the harmful effects of stress.  During the autumn make use of the colorful leaves that the season brings.

Alternatively, plant something. There is nothing more rewarding than observing growth which you have been instrumental in. Whether it is the growth of your child, a project, a business or a plant. It’s easy to plant something, nurture it and watch it come to maturity. Nurturing a plant helps take your mind off more stressful thoughts as you would be focused on exactly how to take care of this plant. The practice of keeping a bonsai tree is often thought to help cultivate patience in its owner as the tree requires appropriate water, care, trimming, and fertilizing to grow into a healthy tree. It is considered an excellent way to relieve everyday stress, reduce hostility and increase inner peace.
